Lindsay Orosz“Free college.” It sounds great, doesn’t it? And no, I am not talking about scholarships or selective free rides. I mean free college, period. The opportunity for every high school graduate to advance into a more sophisticated, career guiding, and exclusive second-school and not come out with thousands of dollars in debt. It actually sounds amazing. It seems so crazy of an idea that it it strange that the idea has even come up. Bernie Sanders, a presidential candidate running for the Democratic Party, has made it one of his goals as a potential future president to get rid of college tuition. Don’t believe me? Check out his website where he has an article titled It’s Time to Make College Tuition Free and Debt Free which includes 6 steps on exactly how to make it free. In what he calls the “Sanders Plan”, his steps include stopping the federal government from making a profit on student loans, imposing a tax on Wall Street Speculators, and allowing students to use financial aid and work study programs. From the outside and just by reading the title of the article, it seems like a dream come true. To go on with your life after college without debt and loans. Looking at the fine print though, it gives another impression. For example, on the same article as mentioned above, one of Bernie’s plans is to cut student loans in about half. From 4.29% to about 2.37%. But wait, doesn’t he want free college? If it’s free then why would student loans be taken out? It seems contradictory and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Plus the whole fancy phrased sentence of “imposing a tax on Wall Street Spectators” basically means putting more taxes on everyone, Yes, more taxes. So when thinking about it? Would college really be free? Looking at it by it’s title may seem great but when actually looking at the fine print and the effects it puts on the economy, it’s not and causes even more stress on you and your wallet. Plus people won’t only pay the tax while in college or if their child is. It is for every single person in the US whether they have kids going to college or not. So when hearing a bright, good sounding idea, it might be wise to read closer and find out what is being promised. By Bernie Sanders, or any of the other candidates.
