Allie Milliner Many students are often heard complaining about J-town in some way, shape, or form, however, a great deal of them would probably be highly disappointed if the district were to come in and fire off a bunch of teachers, change up the classes, and instate a ton of new rules. This is a highly plausible possibility since it has happened in a few of our fellow JCPS schools such as Doss, Fairdale, Fern Creek, Iroquois, etc. In order for a school to be labeled as persistently low achieving aka (PLA) school it must not meet its benchmarks for 3 years, have a less than 70% graduation rate at the end of the third year, and have test scores that don’t put them in the 5th percentile range. These schools have come out of PLA status, but J-town is about to become a PLA school, J-town was PLA during the 2014-15 school year, we are about to qualify as PLA for the 2015-16 school year, and after that we only have one more school year until the district comes in and takes over. Ways that we can avoid qualifying as a PLA school in future school years are simple, utilize our resources such as remediation and study skills which can be used for extra study time instead of just sleeping, as students we can try and make sure that we and all of our fellow J-town peers stick through the hard times and the stress and graduate, and we could all prep more for our end of year tests, even see if other students would like to get together to form study groups in order to fully achieve the best score that you can get on the test. J-town isn’t a great school, but it’s our school, and here is a chance to our teachers, staff, and keep J-town as our school.
